Google Enables Migration from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat

Google has introduced a feature allowing Google Workspace admins to migrate messages from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat, simplifying the transition to Google Chat for organizations. Using the dedicated admin console, admins can efficiently migrate data while ensuring a smooth onboarding process.

According to a Google blog post:

“Starting today, we’re enhancing our data migration capabilities, enabling Google Workspace admins to transfer conversations from Microsoft Teams channels to Google Chat spaces. This makes onboarding and deploying Google Chat easier for organizations.”

This new feature is now accessible to all Google Workspace customers.

Migration Process Overview

Google describes the migration process as straightforward within the Admin console:

1. Connect to Microsoft Account: Admins first connect their Microsoft account.

2. Upload a CSV File: A CSV file containing the teams to be migrated is uploaded. Admins can include another CSV file to map email IDs, linking source accounts to their target counterparts in Google Workspace.

3. Set Migration Parameters: Migration can only be performed for users with an active license and Google Chat service enabled. Admins specify the start date for the message transfer.

4. Initiate Migration: The migration begins, transferring messages, channels, and related data to Google Chat spaces.

5. Delta Migration Option: A delta migration can transfer any new messages added to Teams channels since the initial migration, skipping previously migrated content to prevent duplication.

The tool preserves existing Google Chat spaces and messages, ensuring no deletions or modifications occur. Upon completion, admins can export a detailed report highlighting skipped, failed, or warning-inducing content during the migration.
